50 series information refresh

Post by _centuriEC03 »

50 series Century generation information compiled into one place. Please do not comment on this thread as I will update this slowly. This is a new thread from my existing one. I will ask the admin to delete the last one.

Background of the 50 Series Century

The 50 series Century was the first Century in over 30 years to recieve a complete overhaul. Engineers fused the suspension engineering of the UCF21 Celsior, developed Japans 1st V12 engine purely for smoothness, reliability & quietness. Styling was kept traditional while still keeping the hospitality & elegance.

Export market Century

Post by _centuriEC03 »

When the 50 series Century came out back in 1997, Toyota wanted to sell the Century in other markets. So they made two export market variants called GZG50L & GZG50 R
L - Left hand drive
R- Right hand drive

As far as I can tell from research, these export market Centuries did not sell well. An example would be in mainland China, the Century lasted 2 years (1999 - 2001) before the pulled it from the market. It was overshadowed by cars like the BMW 760LI priced around 2.5 million yuan, apparently only 2 were sold as a export market specification there. One owned by the Japanese embassy and the other owned by a rich man. According to some Chinese sources they do have alot more Centuries in the country including a VG45 limousine.

Countries sold in

Brunei
North Africa regions
Singapore
Thailand
Middle East
Hong Kong
China

Differences in market

Hong Kong was the only country to get fender mirrors outside of Japan (the rest got door mirrors)
Brunei had the lace curtains as standard
Speedometers were set to 250kmh not 180kmh like the domesticated Japanese ones

We are unsure when they stopped producing vehicles for the exported markets.

Model Code's

E-GZG50L-AEPGKW ( Left Hand Drive Export Market specification)
E-GZG50R-AEPGKW ( Right Hand Drive Export Market specification)

Model Code Breakdown

E-GZG50L or R - AEPGKW

E - The code shows which Japanese emissions laws the vehicle complies with
GZG50 - Chassis code
L or R - L = Left Hand Drive R = Right Hand Drive
A - Car model = Toyota Century
E - Body type = Sedan
P - 4 Floor shift transmission
G - Grade (they don't have a grade)
K - DOHC EFI 1GZFE
W - Europe and general countries

Full english export market manual

http://century.trinom.org/

(This has all the diagrams, buttons etc in English)

For some markets you'll need the left hand drive headlights to comply with standards. Here are part numbers from the LHD Variant (E-GZG50L-AEPGKW)

Genuine Right Side Headlight: 81130-40050
Genuine Left Side Headlight: 81170-40050
