Air Intake Parts

For my 1997 I've been working on replacing the spark plugs and replacing the knock sensors. Both require taking off all of the air intake system. I figured it would be good to have some reference pictures for our future members!

Let's take a look at each part of the air intake going from fresh air into the engine and finally into the valves.

After the inlet air cleaner -> then engine air filter -> air box ->

Next comes air hose 1 & 2 ->

HOSE, AIR CLEANER, NO.1
17881-32031
(Passenger side)
HOSE, AIR CLEANER, NO.2
17882-32121
(Driver side)

Comparing my old vs new hoses. Here is passenger side:

You can see the MAF (mass air flower sensor) and air resonator boxes attaches. \

Driver side:

Every time i've seen these hoses they are hard as a rock. But the new ones are supple, soft rubber hoses. I guess time + heat does that to rubber...

Next comes Throttle body. Or should I say throttle bodies! These are quite expensive so I have not replaced them yet.

At first glance they look the same but they are separate part numbers and you notice the vacuum hose is different.

BODY ASSY, THROTTLE W/MOTOR
22030-32020
(Passenger side)
BODY ASSY, THROTTLE W/MOTOR, LH
22040-32020
(Driver side)

Notice the part number on bottom half. Some sources say those part numbers are discontinued.

Mine were dirty. But they responded well to throttle body cleaning spray.

Next is the air intake connector x2

Same part number just mirrored on each side.

CONNECTOR, INTAKE AIR
17861-32010

Beautiful piece of solid aluminum. It cleaned up nicely.

Here is the backside of each connector. The plate allows for the hose from the PCV value. The crank gas enters into the intake to be combusted. You order another x2 throttle body gaskets if you are going to replace those.

Next is the "ribs" to protect the heart of our V12 :D

2 intake runners. Or in Toyota speak:

TANK, INTAKE AIR SURGE
17109-32010

Same part number for both passenger and driver side!

If you notice on the outer corner of each intake there are side-specific "unions" that need to be added depending on which side.

Here you see the vacuum diaphragm controls a butterfly valve. Part of the "variable length inlet runners (ACIS)" system.

Continue on the intake air surge tank:

This piece of plastic covers the top of the spark plug coils / wires. It's in very good shape. I assume it has been replaced before but I can't find a separate part number?

Next is the intake manifold.

MANIFOLD, INTAKE

Notice the x12 holes for each fuel injector to fit.

"The main gasket"

GASKET, AIR SURGE TANK TO INTAKE MANIFOLD

and then manifold to head gasket x2

Just want to give a big thumbs up and thank you for taking the time to take pictures and document the "intake stack". Really helped me visualize what I was going to be dealing with when digging in and replacing the valve cover gaskets, coils, plugs, etc etc.

Also was totally blown away by how supple new intake hoses are; worth the ~$120 investment (mine also had a few tears under the clamps).
