English-language GZG50 owner's manual

As far as I know there is not an English language version of the second-gen Century owner's manual, so I made one. If you just want the manual then you should be able to download the PDFs attached to this post at the bottom - please subscribe to the topic for updates as this likely isn't the final version.

In case anyone else wants to replicate this process (or in case I come back here because I forgot what I did), here's what I did to create it:
  • I went to https://manual.toyota.jp/century/ and downloaded the manual - the page is in Japanese but your web browser should be able to translate it. There are three manuals listed with somewhat random looking production dates on them... my car is a 1998, so I just chose the earliest one ("August 2010 to July 2011" - file is century_201008.pdf)
  • The PDF file has a password if you want to edit or convert it - I removed this using Cisdem PDF Password Remover (sorry Toyota!). Weirdly, the PC version refused to remove the password, but the Mac one worked
  • I used Google's document translation service to translate the PDF. Unfortunately the translation service has a page limit of 300 pages and the manual is 344 pages, so I used Adobe Acrobat to split the document into two, translated them separately and then joined them together again
  • I went through this same process for the separate "rear seat" manual (century_sheet_201008.pdf) and the navigation system manual (century_navi_201008.pdf)
Some notes/things still to do:
  • The whole thing was translated by a computer so it's not likely to win a Booker Prize
  • A lot of the formatting is weird due to English not taking up quite the same space as Japanese

It turns out an official English-language manual is available for purchase here: https://jpnz.co.nz/product/toyota-centu ... -n-o-3072/. I'm going to get a hold of one of those and see what it looks like!

I printed a couple of copies of this through Lulu.com. They actually look great - I'm going to tidy the PDFs up a bit and then I should be able to print some more. The cost for the main manual was $17; I'd imagine that the rear seat and EMV manuals will cost about the same.

Will report back once I'm done - subscribe to this thread if you're interested!

Second version came through today and I think it's pretty much as good as it's going to get. Cover looks good...

Most of the pages look pretty decent...

It's not as good as the factory manual - there are quite a few situations where tables look a bit odd and images don't exactly line up with text. I think all these final issues could be fixed with some patient PDF editing - if you're interested in fixing the last few things in the PDF then let me know and I'll send you all the files.

I have made it available to buy on Lulu here. Thanks to anyone who ends up buying one - I make $1 per book and I'll put the proceeds towards running the forum!

I'm going to start work on the rear-seat owners manual and the EMV manual - will report back here once those are available too.
